William Westmoreland
General William Westmoreland was commander of the U.S. Military Assistance Command in Vietnam. He was born on March 26, 1914 in South Carolina. He fought in World War II and also the Korean war. After he had graduated High School he attended The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina. He then went the elite United States Military Academy at West Point shortly after Graduating in 1936. He climbed the ranks of the military very fast and 1960 he settled down and became a superindendent at West Point. But he didn't stop there in 1963, he went to Vietnam. After the Vietnamese posed a threat President Johnson authorized Westmoreland as the commander of the U.S. Military Assistance Command. After the war he retired in 1972, and in 1974 successfully ran for governor. William Westmoreland died on July 18, 2005 in Charleston South Carolina. He is still very well known and recognized as a major person that took place in the Vietnam war
